How to Make a Balloon Arch
By Jonathan Hostetler
Balloons are a simple and inexpensive way to decorate any type of a party or event. Balloon arches add an air of sophistication to any event whether it is a wedding reception, fancy dress ball or a simple birthday party. Balloon arches are simple to make and can make any party come alive.
Are you wondering how to make make balloon arches with either air or helium filled balloons? Air filled balloon arches tend to be less expensive while helium filled balloon arches are simpler to make and are easier to adapt to different situations. You can even make an arch that uses a combination of air and helium filled balloons. For that reason, we will be discussing the helium balloon arches.
Materials You Will Need
To make a helium balloon arch, you are going to need enough balloons to make the size of arch you want. You will also need to decide how many different colors of balloons you will want to use and plan accordingly. You will also need one or two tanks of helium and sandbags or other weights to hold your arch in place, as well as some strong fish line for tying the balloons.
Making the Arch
The simplest way of how to make a helium balloon arch is to decide how tall and wide you want your arch to be, and then measure out the proper amount of fish line plus a foot extra at each end. Next, take two chairs with their backs facing each other and separate them as far apart as the fish line for the arch. Using the excess fish line you are left with at each end, tie the end to the back of each chair. This will make a waist length height for you to attach the balloons at.
Next, blow up sets of two balloons and tie them together. If you are using two colors in your arch, you can either use two balloons of the same color for one set and two of the other color for the other set. If you are using four colors of balloons in your arch, make a set of two of the colors and another set using the other two colors. In all cases, join the two pairs of balloons together to form a cluster of four balloons. You then either tie or twist the balloons on the fish line as close together as possible starting at one end and working through to the other end.
Once you have filled the entire length of the fish line, you simply untie the line from the chair backs and attach it to the weights. You then place the arch into the place and position you want. The distance you place the weights from one another will determine how wide and tall your arch will be. The helium in the balloons will naturally rise, forming the arch.
You can then uses these arches at the entrance to set the mood, free standing for picture taking, or behind the guest of honor's seating place, or use several placed close together to form a tunnel leading into a building. Remember that when using the arch outdoors, your weights holding the arch needs to be much heavier than for indoor use.
