How Much Do Celebrity Weddings Cost? How Much Do Celebrity Weddings Cost? By: Michelle Lindsey
We all love to read about celebrity weddings but some of them cost more than we earn in a lifetime! Many celebrities have millions of dollars to spend and, when money is no object, the sky seems to be the limit with their wedding possibilities. Catherine Zeta Jones's wedding dress alone cost over $100,000. Elton John and David Furnish had 600 guests attending their nuptials.
The most expensive celebrity wedding was when producer David Gest married Oscar-winning entertainer Liza Minelli. This cost them a whopping $3.5 million! It was Liza's fourth wedding and the pair married in New York's Marble Collegiate church in March 2002. The couple registered for 389 wedding gifts from Tiffany & Co, including twelve silver platters and new crystal and flatware. Elizabeth Taylor was the maid of honor and Michael Jackson was the best man. There were around 500 guests, including Lauren Bacall, Diana Ross and Mia Farrow. Tony Bennett provided the entertainment, backed by a 60 piece orchestra. Natalie Cole also sang at the nuptials. The wedding cake had 12 tiers and every received a personalized wedding favor in a satin candy box embossed with the words "Liza and David 4 Ever". Liza and David divorced within a year.
Other celebrities are prepared to spend similar amounts of money on their weddings. When Paul McCartney married Heather Mills in June 2002, they spent $3 million. Their wedding was an elaborate ceremony at Castle Leslie in Ireland and 300 family members and friends attended.
When Indian businessman Arun Nayar wed model/actress Elizabeth Hurley in March 2007, they enjoyed 8 days of festivities. They had 300 guests including designer Valentino and Elton John. The couple married in Gloucestershire's Sudeley Castle. They had a second traditional Hindu ceremony in the Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur, India. Palace-view Maharani suites cost a minimum of $10,000 per night. The total cost of their double ceremony was $2.5 million.
Tom Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes set them back $2 million. They married in November 2006 in the beautiful 15th century Odescalchi Castle near Rome, Italy. Their guest list include superstars like Jennifer Lopez, David and Victoria Beckham and Jada Pinkett Smith. Katie's off the shoulder ivory silk gown was designed personally by Giorgio Armani.
The wedding between Larry Fortensky and Elizabeth Taylor also cost $2 million. The couple married in October 1991 and it was Elizabeth's 8th wedding. The wedding was held at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. Elizabeth Taylor wore a pale yellow wedding dress by Valentino. There were 150 guests, including Eddie Murphy, Nancy Reagan and Liza Minelli.
When real estate mogul Donald Trump wed model Melania Knauss in January 2005, they spend $1 million on the proceedings. They married at the Bethesda by the Sea Episcopalian Church in Palm Beach. They had a reception for 400 guests and celebrity chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten catered the event which a 36 piece orchestra provided the music. Melania wore a strapless Christian Dior wedding gown made from 300 feet of satin and beaded with 1,500 crystals. Her train was 13 feet long and weighed 50 lbs.
While not all celebrities choose to spend millions of dollars on their big day, most of them want to make their day as special as possible and if they can afford it, why not!
